As a media professional, I’m constantly pursuing the most accurate information, and pushing back against misinformation. In recent years, I’ve made something of a crusade of it. (I’m the Facebook friend you don’t want to have — the one who’s always posting the link to Snopes.)
As part of my Master’s Degree in Interactive Media at Quinnipiac University, I did some research into how misinformation spreads online, and how it can be fought. The result was a paper called “Someone is Wrong on the Internet.”
Beginning with a viral story about a “racist” peanut butter sandwich, I trace current theories about the spread of rumors, conspiracy theories, and outright lies — and end with the latest efforts to try to improve the quality of information online.
